ROVs (remote operated vehicles) are invaluable tools in the fin fish farming industry from site selection through full-scale operation. The HydroView Professional has been used to observe all aspects of farm operations from net/fence integrity to fish population studies to food consumption analysis.
Before a farm is built, a ROV can be used to scout the location and determine the ideal conditions. Once the farm is in operation, daily monitoring of the fish and nets is extremely important in preventing stock loss. The fish are monitored for health and feeding habits. Fine tuning of feed maximizes efficiency and limits the impacts of unconsumed feed accumulating on the sea bed. Nets are inspected for holes, mooring line attachments, security and integrity. Maintaining the security of the farm’s nets or cages protects the stock and prevents escape of farmed fish into the wild or infiltration of the farm by predators. Morts can be identified and removed using a ROV’s grabber arm or pushed to a collection point using Aquabotix’s proprietary fish plow. Rapid identification and removal of sick or dead fish, limits the spread of disease to the rest of the school.
ROVs can also carry a variety of environmental sensors, including dissolved oxygen, pH, nitrites and dissolved solids.
